The Taylor Sheridan TV universe keeps getting bigger. Lawmen: Bass Reeves is the latest show from the prolific Yellowstone creator. It’s streaming on Paramount+, but CBS is giving those who don’t subscribe to the streaming service a way to check out the series for free.

Two episodes of ‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ will air after ‘Yellowstone’ on Nov. 12

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is a streaming anthology series starring David Oyelowo as legendary real-life lawman Bass Reeves. Though it was originally billed as a Yellowstone spinoff, it later evolved into a standalone anthology series disconnected from the saga of the Dutton family.

Reeves was born into slavery and later became one of the first Black U.S. Deputy Marshals west of the Mississippi. The show explores his story and how he wrestles with the moral and spiritual cost of his career to him and his family.

The show – which is executive produced by Sheridan – premiered Nov. 5 on Paramount+. On Sunday, Nov. 12 it will make its broadcast debut on CBS. The network will air the first two episodes of Lawmen: Bass Reeves back-to-back starting at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following an episode of Yellowstone. The show’s premiere episode is also streaming for free on the Paramount+ YouTube channel.

In addition to Oyelowo, the show stars Lauren E. Banks, Demi Singleton, Forrest Goodluck, Barry Pepper, Grantham Coleman, Donald Sutherland, and Dennis Quaid. Future iterations of the series will focus on other iconic lawmen and outlaws throughout history. Chad Feehan created Lawmen: Bass Reeves and also serves as executive producer.

CBS’s special airing of Lawmen: Bass Reeves is just a teaser for the rest of the eight-episode series. To see all of Reeves’ story, viewers will need to subscribe to Paramount+. New episodes will be available to stream weekly through Dec. 17.

Paramount+ Essential plans cost $5.99 per month. Paramount+ with Showtime is $11.99 per month. In addition to Lawmen: Bass Reeves, subscribers can stream other shows from Sheridan, including Mayor of Kingstown, Special Ops: Lioness, and Tulsa King, as well as the Yellowstone prequels 1883 and 1923. Could fans finally get the Beth and Rip spinoff they have always wanted?

The forthcoming 2024 spinoff from the Yellowstone chronicles teases the potential return of two pivotal characters, Rip (Cole Hauser) and Beth (Kelly Reilly). Their narratives have become so intertwined that their joint presence has become essential for the story to progress.

While on set, Costner ate food from Yellowstone‘s celebrity chef Gabriel “Gator” Guilbeau, who cooked for the actors. So, what did Costner eat? Here’s what Gator revealed.

Chef Gabriel “Gator” Guilbeau is featured in Yellowstone and is the chef for the actors in the series. He has a lot of mouths to feed (and food preferences to consider). This, of course, also means he prepared meals for Yellowstone star Kevin Costner during his time on the show as John Dutton.

So, what did Costner like to eat? Gator told Delish that Costner loved his famous pineapple bourbon bread pudding for dessert, as did several other actors from the series. But Costner won’t eat just anything that Gator creates.

“Kevin is a very picky eater,” Gator said. “In no way, shape, or form would he ever eat grilled octopus,” he added, referring to one scene in Yellowstone where the chef brings charred octopus out for the Duttons to eat.

“Considering that this is a man that, before he met me, I think solely may have lived off of canned chili and hot dogs,” Gator added, “it was a lot for me to put a Mediterranean diet in front of him.”

According to the chef, Costner always has room for dessert. Whenever Costner saw that Gator was creating something sweet, he’d motion for the chef to come to his camp. “When he smells stuff like this cooking, I always get the gesture to come on over. I’ll bring him a nice dessert with a big scoop of ice cream.”

“Kevin always likes to tell me how he’s on a diet and off the sugar, and then he’ll ask me to make an apple pie pretty much the same day, usually,” Gator stated. “Kevin may or may not have a sweet tooth.”

Aside from dessert, Costner likely eats plenty of meals and snacks created by the chef. A behind-the-scenes clip shows Yellowstone actor Ian Bohen talking about Gator’s truck that supplied “breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and snacks in between.”

Gator also said he likes “reading the crew” when it comes to what to cook that day. “If people are feeling blue, they want chicken noodle soup,” he stated. “That first day of fall, the cinnamon comes out, the nutmeg comes out. You can tell what they want.”

Yet, John’s role extends beyond being merely the proprietor of the renowned Dutton Ranch. He is a doting father to three children, a proud grandfather to one, and even harbors aspirations of entering the political realm. As we approach the final two seasons of Yellowstone, here’s a closer look at his epic journey so far.

The early life of John Dutton

Yellowstone’s John Dutton III hails from a lineage of ranchers, born and bred in Montana. Although his exact birthdate remains undisclosed, it’s safe to assume he’s roughly about 60 years old.

Growing up on the vast expanse of the Dutton Ranch in Yellowstone, John was raised by his father, John Dutton Sr. However, details regarding his mother or potential siblings remain unknown.

As John Dutton Sr.’s health declined, he retired from the ranching life, passing the reins to his son, John. Prior to stepping down, he extracted a promise from his son to never relinquish the ranch to anyone. This promise resonated deeply within John, driving him to fiercely defend the ranch against any threats.

In due course, John tied the knot with Evelyn, and together they raised four children: Lee, Kayce, Beth, and Jamie. Tragically, Evelyn met her untimely demise in 1997, following a horseback riding accident.

A look the ‘Yellowstone’ patriarch’s love life in the series

Prior to the start of Yellowstone, John and Evelyn had a profound love for each other. Unfortunately, John never managed to fully recover from the devastating loss of his beloved wife and never pursued another marriage.

But that didn’t stop him from becoming romantically involved with several women in Yellowstone. This includes his informal relationship with Governor Lynelle Perry.

John’s primary role in Yellowstone revolves around being the patriarch of the Dutton family and owning the Dutton Ranch. As the owner of the largest ranch in the country, John used to be Montana’s Livestock Commissioner.

At the request of Governor Perry and with his son Kayce’s ascent in mind, John willingly stepped down from his role as Livestock Commissioner. This decision paved the way for Kayce to assume the mantle of responsibility.

Throughout the series, it was revealed that John received a diagnosis of colon cancer. In his sixties, a tumor infiltrated his colon, leading to a surgical intervention where two feet of his colon were removed, effectively curing him.

Turning back to politics, John has made some major moves in the political sphere. After discovering that Governor Perry was going to run for the United States Senate, John set his eyes on the Governor’s seat.

But John’s bid for the seat was complicated after he learned that his son, Jamie, was also running. Yellowstone’s last season ended with John venturing to Helena to formalize his campaign.

In part 1 of season 5 of Yellowstone, John grudgingly stepped into the role of Montana’s Governor, complicating his career and family life.

After some questioning, Jenner and Gamble revealed that Jenner had asked him to turn down the role because she was uncomfortable with any romance storylines he would have had to act out. Gamble did turn down the part, but it doesn’t sound like Jenner would be willing to do the same for her beau.
